The date of the center hall colonial style stone structure is unknown, but some records put its age close to the origional Solitude house, which dates to the 1720's.The structure is assumed to have always been associated with the Union Iron Works / Taylor Iron and Steel Company. The structure likely was always used as a general office for the steel works, general store, or possibly partial residential. The structure was expanded in the mid 19th century with a right side and rear elevation additions. A third floor and second rear elevation addition were both added in the early 20th century. The front porch was removed and an ornate entrance doorway, stairs and over-door tablet were all done in the late 1930's or early 1940's.The structure was the centerpiece of the Taylor Wharton Iron and Steel company until its closing in the 1970's.The structure remains un-used to this day.The main exterior stone walls are in good condition and in need of little repair. Interior and roof are in need of major repairs.
